Camping in the lakes
OK, it was wet, but fun.
We stayed in a Youth Hostel camping barn called Catbells which is near Keswick. It a relatively cheap way of staying indoors self catering without the hassle of tents and a nicer toilet. The barn had toilets, kitchen and sleeping area but no heating. Enough about where we were staying.
There were 6 of us for the weekend, and Fi came on Sunday. Friday night we travelled across and had chips in Keswick. They are good chips. We also bought provisions for the next day and found a sharply angled bridge to cross near the barn which was so good we went over it a couple of times (not because we were lost and had to turn round you understand)
Saturday dawned as it usually does leaving us with a view over the hills and a hint of wet weather (not rain - that was to come later). Wet weather being water falling from the sky. We made lunch and were off. We went for a walk up a hill because that is what you do in the lakes (unless you look at Beatrix Potter things and Daffodils). We went up Blencathra via Sharp edge. Blencathra is 870m tall so quite a walk. Sharp edge is well described - it is a corner on the hill and sharp jaggy and pointed rocky bits to scramble up. It was a good view. It started raining part way up the hill (rain being wet stuff falling from the sky in great quantities), and was windy (wind being air moving about at about 100mph). There a walk. That is what you do unless you are doing other stuff.
At the bottom of the hill we did do other stuff - we went shopping. After a cup of tea and cake we went shopping, we are from Kirklevington after all and are quite civilised. The other thing to do in Keswick is shop for outdoor equipment and the outdoor equipment shops know this, there are hundreds of them. We had a preliminary shopping session on Saturday. We bought more food then went back and cooked dinner
Let me explain, dinner is an event when we are away often taking an hour or so to eat and several hours to make. Saturdays dinner was soup, a thick minestrone soup. It was good and followed by cake and custard. The effort of digesting this nearly sent us to sleep. Cards followed, leading me to believe that Dave (our local mountain expert) should be banned from playing card games he knows and likes. I think we could beat him at cheat though...
Sunday followed Saturday in a well ordered way. We made breakfast and lunches the same way we did the day before. Exciting times mornings. The plan was to go climbing but when we got there, there was about 40 20 seat minibusses parked in the car park so we changed our plans. Thinking to what there is to do in the lake district, we discounted Beatrix Potter, and planned to go shopping on Monday, so the only thing left is to see daffodils or go for a walk. We did both, walking past daffodils! We went down to the end of the lake and went walking there with a plan to go up and around then down. When we got up the rain started (see earlier for rain definition) just as we were having lunch, so we turned round and went down again, although by a different path. We made the trip a bit more exciting with a scramble around some crags. Then we went back to Keswick while Dave, John and Lauren went to collect Fi.
Dinner that night was veggie sausages and mash with gravy. It was made more entertaining by me having cracked my head off a low beam in the barn. Oh how they laughed. We went to the pub later - and before you asked, the Explorers drank soft drinks although I am sure they would have been served other drinks if they wanted them. Back to the barn and sleeping, we were all knackered by now.
Monday we tried climbing again, this time we were thwarted by the rain so we went gill scrambling (walking up a stream without getting wet). Fun. Then went shopping. A couple of us needed new kit so Keswick was the place to be.
Home started to be appealing now so we headed home and to baths and bed. A fun weekend
