Web Page Design
While this web site has been operating, people have commented that it is a good one to look at. OK there isn’t loads of information on it so I assume the design is what they are commenting on. Thanks to all of you who appreciate the work that has gone into it. I could fill this with loads of info - perhaps numbering thousands of pages but then there would be no secret information that made the group better than the rest...

What I was going to write about here was my assumptions and ideas for creating this site.

My First and only real rule is KEEP IT SIMPLE

So no Flash animations, no animated graphics, and no ActiveX controls. I do use Javascript all over the site but I figure it is only really old computers that won’t be able to display the pages. Cutting edge technology is good, but I want Mrs Smith, a Scouts’ Granny to read this as well.

The content reflected what the Explorer Scouts were interested in at the time, and this ranges from the normal, - camping and such like, to the strange - dancing animals on the internet.

This web site is not designed to advertise events or provide information about events, the Explorer Scouts are informed about these in the normal way. There are 2 reasons for this. The first is a basic security for the young people and adults, to not advertise where they will be and when to any stranger who happens to look at these pages. The second reason is that out of date and old event adverts or newsletters distract from the rest of the content of the site. In say 2010, why would you be interested in a newsletter from 2003? The third reason (I know I said there was only 2…) is that no matter how good the details are online, I am sceptical whether the addition of the events details here are as useful as they can be. All the young people have contact details for the leaders and tend to e-mail or phone with questions about events.

So that’s my thoughts very quickly on what is here. In the future I will expand this and add other sections, such as Pioneering and Knots and the campfire section
