Map Symbol Cards

Game 1, Matching Pairs.
A dead simple exercise, all you need to do is print these pages onto thin card then cut out all the squares individually. The exercise is like the normal matching pairs game, each player turns over 2 cards and id they match they keep them and have another turn, if not the next player takes a turn.
The pairs that match are the map symbol and its description (i.e. a + is matched with 'Place of Worship', - - - - - - is a footpath).
Perhaps print a second sheet as an answer sheet, the descriptions are to the right of the symbol.

Game 2, What is this?
Print out the grid of symbols and cut it out in rectangles so that the symbol and its description are on the one sheet. Now fold these sheets in half and tape it so it stays folded in half. The participants have to tell you what the symbol means - answer is now on the back of the sheet (Descriptions are to the right of the symbol).

Both these games can be played as maybe a relay race after a training exercise.

Game 3
Bingo. The normal bingo rules apply here. Print out the cards listed below and shuffle them well. Also print out the Bingo Cards so that each player has one or 2 cards each (you can press the pafe reset button to get a new page of random cards). The rules: Each player has a Bingo card, and the caller calls chooses aa card nd calls out what is on it. If the player has that map symbol on his sheet they cross it off. The winner is the first to have crossed off all their symbols, indicating that they have done that by shouting 'Bingo' or 'House'. You can also have intermefiate stages to the overall win by giving them the opportunity to be the first player to have crossed off all 4 corners and a complete line

This is much like standard Bingo

Teaching Map Symbols
Print out the card and show the group what the symbols are and explain their meaning (and what they actually are). It is easier to see a large picture in a group than a small picture on a map. Once you have explained the symbols get them to spot them on the map.
When you get to roads and contour lines, get them to trace their finger along a road and explain if it is going uphill or downhill.
