Going on Your First Hike

Before We Set Off
Before you set off however there are a couple of things that you need to know and the leaders need from you.
Firstly, if there is any cost for the hike we need this money, this money will be used to pay for things such as vehicle hire, snacks, equipment we need (such as a map and compass) - many, many things. We also need you to return any paperwork we give you to complete. These bits of paper have important bits of information for the leaders on them if you have an accident - for example, how to call your parents.

We need you to get to the start of the walk. If you don't know how to get there ask one of the leaders. Often the route we will be walking has been carefully planned so that we return and end the walk at a certain time, if you are late arriving then we will be late ending the walk. If you are very late then we might have set off before you get there, assuming that you weren't coming.

During the walk
The walk will be led by one of the leaders who will have experience walking in that type of terrain. They are in charge of your walk and are concerned that you are safe, amongst other things. They will know where you are walking, although they might ask you to lead sections of the walk.
The route will have been planned to include stops and rest breaks the faster walkers will tend to get ahead of the slower walkers and they get more rests. The group will not get split up, the leaders will know where all the walkers are.
Depending on the walk there might be stops for food, drinks and to go to shops - the leaders will let you know what you need before you set off
The group will have a first aid kit and if you have an accident then the leaders will be able to help you.

After the walk
The time we return is based on the estimated time we give on the notes about the walk but it is variable. Please tell your parents not to panic if we are not home exactly when we said we would be, if there are any serious delays then we will let them know. We have a system to let parents know if there are serious problems along the walk and delays are likely to be an extra stop to look at something on the route.

Let us know what was good and bad about the walk - if we don't know we won't know what to improve next time, then go home and have a rest

Equipment Needed
The leaders will be able to advise you what you might like to take and where to get it. Read through the equipment list we give you and if you need equipment talk to the leaders, we might be able to lend you some stuff. Equipment prices vary and there are expensive and cheaper equipment for each type and I wouldn't rush out to buy everything on the equipment list without asking for advise.
