Outdoor Leaders Skills
The following list is a list of skills that you may have picked up with your time in the Scout movement. Some of the skills are quite specific to the Scouts and even to a particular section. Some of the skills are relevant to daily life as well.
This is a combined list of skills leaders have - for all the sections in a Scout group. You might not have them all

Below is a list of Skills that might be needed by Scout leaders and the sections the Skill may be required in. It is not an exhaustive list, nor is it a list of skills you must have to be a leader, it is a list of skills that could be used during outdoor activities

Outdoor and Camping Skills
Axe, Saw, Knife, Wood, Fire - Demonstrate a knowledge of the safety rules of axemanship, bow saws and sheath knives
Axe, Saw, Knife, Wood, Fire - Be able to recognise different types of wood and know the burning properties of it
Axe, Saw, Knife, Wood, Fire - Demonstrate the ability to light a wood burning fire and keep it alight and know how to extinguish it safely. Demonstrate how to clear and leave the area in a tidy condition
Axe, Saw, Knife, Wood, Fire - Demonstrate the ability to cook on a wood fire
Axe, Saw, Knife, Wood, Fire - Take a leading part in building a campfire and know how to control its burning
Stoves and Lamps - Demonstrate the working method of pressure stoves and lanterns and how to fill, light and extinguish them safely
Stoves and Lamps - Demonstrate the maintenance and storage of Gas stoves and Lamps, describe how to change a cylinder safely
Stoves and Lamps - Describe the safety rules and precautions for various stoves and lamps
Tents and Camping Equipment - Demonstrate the correct pitching and striking of a patrol tent and have knowledge of its correct storage
Tents and Camping Equipment - Demonstrate the correct pitching and striking of a Hike tent and have knowledge of its correct storage
Tents and Camping Equipment - Demonstrate how to store and maintain equipment
Tents and Camping Equipment - Demonstrate how to care for equipment at camp
Tents and Camping Equipment - List the equipment needed at hike, Patrol and Troop Camp
Tents and Camping Equipment - Be able to identify different types of tent
Tents and Camping Equipment - Knowledge of Toilet Tents
Hygiene - Demonstrate how to care for personal and Group hygiene in Camp conditions
Hygiene - Demonstrate how to care for the environment and how to protect the countryside
Pioneering - Demonstrate the safety precautions to be taken during pioneering projects including the Aerial Runway Code
Pioneering - Identify simple pioneering projects and state their benefits
Pioneering - Knowledge of Levers
Pioneering - Knowledge of Pulleys
Pioneering - Knowledge of Anchorages
Pioneering - Knowledge of Lashings
Rope work - Types of Rope
Rope work - Demonstrate knowledge on storing and care of ropes
Rope work - Demonstrate at least 2 ways of preventing ropes from fraying
Rope work - Demonstrate how to Splice a rope
Navigation - Recognise symbols on OS maps, and relate detail to observed landscape features
Navigation - Be able to orientate your position on a map
Navigation - Take a bearing from an OS map using a 'Silva' type compass and convert that bearing into a compass course allowing for magnetic variation
Navigation - Cross country on a compass course involving at least 5 pre set points
Navigation - Devise an outdoor activity involving signs, contours, scale and direction on an OS map
Menus and Catering - Produce a menu for a weekend sleepover, camp or Holiday
Menus and Catering - List the Food and equipment required
Menus and Catering - Backwoods Cooking
