Indoor / Basic Leaders Skills
The following list is a list of skills that you may have picked up with your time in the Scout movement. Some of the skills are quite specific to the Scouts and even to a particular section. Some of the skills are relevant to daily life as well.
This is a combined list of skills leaders have - for all the sections in a Scout group. You might not have them all

Understand the Scout Associations’ Policy to safeguard the welfare of all members
Know the association’s code of practice "Young People First" (Yellow Card)
Understand authorisation procedures and qualifications which are necessary before undertaking activities
Be aware of the Scout Associations rules applying to adventurous activities
Be aware of the appropriate procedures if an accident occurs
Be aware of the Scout associations rules referring to mini busses and other forms of transport
Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the safety and welfare precautions required whilst on an outing / expedition
Understand the benefits of close contacts with parents
Understand how parents can be informed of Scouting activities
Understand the importance of involving parents
Know, Understand and accept the your sections Law (if appropriate) and Promise
Understand the and accept Aims of the Scout movement and have a general knowledge of its history
Describe a going up ceremony and investiture. Discuss the purpose and methods of an inspection (if appropriate)
Be aware of the Policy, Organisation and Rules
Know the Scout salute, Handshake and motto, and why and when to use them
Demonstrate an understanding of the Scout Groups Safety Policy
Be able to identify any hazards in the Scout headquarters
Demonstrate a knowledge of the whereabouts of any emergency equipment, the main fuse box and gas and water stop taps of the headquarters
Obtain an recognised First Aid Certificate within a year of appointment
Demonstrate an awareness of the different forms of special needs that may be encountered
Possess a knowledge of the Highway, water safety and country codes
Understand the rules appertaining to your sections visits, outings, camps and Holidays
Know, Understand and accept the Beaver Scout Motto
Be able to lead a beaver Scout Colony opening and Closing ceremony
Know what need to be known about the Beaver animal
State the value of story telling to a child of Beaver Scout age and understand when to use story telling to the best effect
Be able to lead a Cub Scout Pack opening and Closing ceremony, incorporating Prayers, the Grand Howl, Flag break and down where appropriate
Have read the Story of Mowglis entry into the pack
Be able to tie 6 knots and know when to use them correctly
Know the stories of the patron saints of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
Know the 16 point of a compass and have a general knowledge of 6 OS signs
Be able to differentiate between the various north poles
Know and understand the reason for contour lines and demonstrate the use of a 6 figure grid reference
Demonstrate a knowledge of tracking signs and identify when to use to best advantage
Know how to start and end meeting correctly, incorporating opening and closing ceremonies, prayers with flag break and flag down where appropriate
